Annecdote - named by Lt. John Stevens after movie of same name; there was no JTR I; because of bad press related to the US airman captured with flight jackets that said “MURDER, INC“, HQ instructed base commanders to screen noseart for similar names. Col Shower believed JACK THE RIPPER II was inflammatory, Lt Stevens argued it was a horror movie name, not a ganster movie like MURDER, INC. The noseart stayed. Stevens was transfered to the 15th AF in Italy in May ‘44.
